Suor Angelica by Giacomo Puccini, a heartbreaking tale of sacrifice, redemption, and faith that transports audiences into the cloistered world of a convent. Angelica, a nun with a secret past, longs for news of the family she left behind. When a long-awaited visit brings devastating news, she must confront an agonizing choice. Puccini’s Suor Angelica delivers a deeply emotional experience — culminating in one of the most stirring finales in opera.
Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni, a masterpiece of passion, betrayal, and vengeance. This gripping tale unfolds in a Sicilian village where love and jealousy ignite a tragic chain of events. Featuring some of opera’s most recognizable melodies, including the soaring Intermezzo, Cavalleria Rusticana is a raw and powerful drama that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
Verismo Opera, founded in 2008 by founding artistic director Frederick Winthrop. Our initial production was La Traviata. Verismo is a cooperative opera group that includes skillful singers, orchestral musicians and artists who collaborate to present imaginative, low-cost but quality opera productions in a variety of settings in the San Francisco Bay Area. Most operas are sung in their original language, but we offer supertitles in English at each venue. Performances include costumes, sets, and a chamber orchestra in intimate settings. Verismo Opera Alumni have performed throughout the world including with The New York Metropolitan Opera, The San Francisco Opera, and many regional theaters throughout the country.
