Verismo Opera, founded in 2008 by founding artistic director Frederick Winthrop. Their initial production was La Traviata.
La Traviata, a tragic opera written by Italian composer, Giuseppe Verdi. La Traviata follows the story of Violetta (a high-class courtesan in 19th-century Paris) and her passionate love affair with Alfredo (a young nobleman). Despite their developing romance, the relationship is soon put under pressure as societal expectations, misunderstandings and illness threaten to tear them apart – ultimately leading to a heart-breaking conclusion.
We are excited to be bringing this exquisite Verdi opera back to the Mira Theatre. Verismo is a cooperative opera group that includes skillful singers, orchestral musicians and artists who collaborate to present imaginative, low-cost but quality opera productions in a variety of settings in the San Francisco Bay Area. Most operas are sung in their original language, but we offer supertitles in English at each venue. Performances include costumes, sets, and a chamber orchestra in intimate settings. Verismo Opera Alumni have performed throughout the world including with The New York Metropolitan Opera, The San Francisco Opera, and many regional theaters throughout the country.
